Meet the Batteryless Cell Phone

One of the biggest nightmares of owning a cell phone is keeping the battery charged. This challenge only seems to get harder as smartphones continue to become more powerful and enriched with new capabilities.

University of Washington researchers might have a solution to this problem, as they've developed a cell phone that doesn't use any batteries and draws power from radio frequencies and ambient lighting conditions.

This phone uses so little power that it can stay on all the time without having to be turned off, but there is one catch: you can only use this phone for incoming and outgoing calls. Indeed, this means no Facebooking or browsing the web, which will be an instant turn-off for many.

Nevertheless, this device could make the perfect emergency cell phone. If cellular carriers were to upgrade their cell towers to broadcast certain radio frequencies, this phone could piggyback off those for power to be used anywhere in the world.

Isn't technology great?
